Calling it Quits

Mike came home from work one evening a few weeks ago and said, "Well, I did it.  I put in my notice and my last day of work is June 1st."  I was in my studio and I can't remember what I was working on, but I dropped it.  Out of shock.  I knew it was coming, since we'd been talking about it for years, but it was one thing to say you're going to give up financial stability for self employment and another to actually do it.  There was a moment when I couldn't breathe.  All the words of the doubters came flooding into my mind, but as he said the words, I could see the weight lift from his body, and I put their words behind me.

Sure, he could keep working and we could build our tiny house on weekends.  We could keep saving and planning and waiting until we're ready, but at some point you have to just say it's enough and start doing

So, here we are.  Calling it quits on the old and movin' on to the new.

  1. Sending good thoughts your way. You are beginning a journey I started almost thirty years ago. It's been really tough at times, but also filled with so much joy. Has it been worth it? Yes and I wouldn't trade it.

  2. As we know, life is short so what are we waiting for, right? Congratulations to you both on such a huge leap ... no doubt there will be challenges and scary times but I bet there will also be adventure and discovery.

  5. Woohoo! This is a big and exciting step- I know this from experience. 3 years ago when my littlest was born, husband also left his job to pursue the life we wanted. It was scary at first, and exhilarating- and has been wonderful through and through.
    Congratulations!

  7. We did this. Believe it'll be okay, and it'll be okay. A wonderful book to start you on your journey: "Outrageous Openness" by Tosha Silver. Good luck!

  8. How absolutely fabulous! I've been following your blog for a bit now and wanted to say hello. This seems like a good post to do so! I am very excited to read more about the house you build. My husband and I are in the midst of similar conversations, as we have land and are trying to figure out how to live on it, with minimal expense. Might you be sharing your house plans here at some point?

    Thanks,
    Chrisoula

    1. Thanks, Chrisoula! I will definitely be posting more about our building plans and the process we go through along the way. Best of luck with your plans, as well. We spent a lot of years having conversations before we even began looking for land.

    2. Thanks for your reply! I look forward to hearing more about your process. We (foolishly) thought that we'd be able to figure out all the house "stuff" once we got the land and that it would go quickly, but that hasn't been the case. Lots of conversations, thinking, rethinking. It certainly isn't a fast process!

  12. You and Mike are my heros. The here-and-now of his resignation is exciting and GOOD. But the uncertainty in the financial area is a tad bit stressful - but believe that it will be there - work toward what you both know is right for your family and be happy with where you are. All that matters is what is in your home today - you, Mike, the children and love.
