Solar Dyeing

Yellow:  Bird's Foot Trefoil
Orange:  Devil's Paint Brush
Green:  Yarrow

The yarrow has surprised me the most, as the leaves have almost completely changed color while solar dyeing.  I had to loosen the lid at one point during the day, because the water was boiling inside and I was afraid it might explode.  You can see the small green spots of yarrow leaves, where the color hasn't quite let go. It's all so exciting, I can hardly stand it.  I'm going to leave them in the jars overnight again, while the fibers soak in an alum bath.

Until tomorrow...

  1. I can hardly wait to see how these dye the fabric. Must be warm where you live to get the water to boil...such a fascinating process.

    1. Thanks, Kristin. It has been in the upper 80's and sunny for a few days now. :)

  2. If solar dyeing needs bright sunlight then there's no chance here, today. The rain is falling gently...

  3. Very exciting and so interesting. It will be fun to see the results!

  4. We have lots of the devil's paint brush (thanks for sharing the name!) - looking forward to seeing your results.
