Gradient Yarn

Do you ever get a creative urge to make something and absolutely have to do it?  No matter what?  That's what happened last night.  At dinner time.  So instead of dinner, I cooked wool.  The boys made sandwiches. (Insert pouty boy faces here.)

I was remembering an evening from camping last week.  It had been stormy off and on all day.  We were all wet, cold and cranky.  Warming our toes around the fire, the blackness of night was beginning to blanket the sky and just above the horizon hung a line of silver clouds.  When the sun set completely, the clouds parted way and we were able to see the stars for the first time in several nights.

Hand Dyed Gradient Yarn
Colorway: A Silver Lining
Superwash Merino / Nylon
Sport Weight

This is the first time I've ever dyed a continuous gradient skein.  It was a bit tricky to keep everything from tangling, but it worked out well enough that I'll definitely be doing this again!  (Unlike the self striping sock yarn.  And in case you're thinking of asking for a custom order, don't.  I will never, ever do that again.  Ever.)

I love, love, love, the way these colors turned out, so vivid and rich.  The photos just don't do it justice.  Navy with undertones of turquoise, moving to a more blue side of turquoise, to a green side of turquoise, and then to a sumptuous shade of silver.  And the sheen.  I'm not used to working with merino, but I may be a convert.

So now I'm swatching (while reading the new issue of Taproot).  I think I'll design a shawl just for this yarn.

What have you been creating this week?

p.s.  Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments and emails yesterday.  We're so grateful for the support and encouragement!

  1. For yarn like that - dinner can wait! Beautiful.

  2. Oh that is beautiful, if the picture -which is beautiful- doesn't do the color justice the yarn must be amazing. How did you dye this?

  3. Just beautiful -I love seeing what you create.

  4. Lovely yarn and I bet it was so much fun to make yarn than dinner! I'm sure it will look stunning all knit up :)

  5. Thank you so much! Once the yarn was finished, I got over the whole not cooking dinner guilt thing;)

Julia, to dye this I separated one whole skein into 4 equal parts without breaking the yarn in between. I put 4 pots on the stove and then I put each section of yarn in a pot with water to soak. Once the yarn was saturated, I added the dye solution and cooked it:)

  6. I love how your yarn came out! You have me thinking about doing this outside and dyeing it in the sun. Hmm...

Can't wait to see what your shawl design turns out to be. It's going to be a lovely project.
