Our vacation... RAIN

This shot about sums up our vacation...  RAIN.  It rained 14 days in a row, minus the 15 minutes or so of sunshine on day four.  I guess when our one and only vehicle broke down two days before we were set to leave, we should have know to reschedule the whole vacation.

Nothing went according to plan, but we made the best of it and had a great time!  Here are a few of our favorite moments...

Willow River Art Fair

Smores and eggs for breakfast.  Cuz you just can't eat enough chocolate in one day!

Digging for worms.

This beautiful cave became a refuge for us when a light drizzle
turned into a down pour on an afternoon hike.
Jake found many fossils embedded into the walls of rock.

We ran into a generous man who lived along the river and made his living panning for gold.  He showed us the gold flecks he'd found that day and taught the boys a few techniques.  Needless to say, we aren't movin' to Beverly Hills!

Can't imagine how these two got poison ivy???

A strawberry snack for the little bird!

Good thing these paddles float!

I forgot how much fun peddle boats can be, especially when I have a strong,
robust 13 year old who loves to do all the work!

Jake caught his first fish on his newest handmade lure!

In hindsight, I'm almost (hahem, I said almost) glad it rained so much.  We weren't able to do the things we'd planned but we ended up having so many new experiences.  The forest takes on a whole new look when it's under a constant drizzle of rain and thanks to my genius husband who once again brought rain gear for us all, we were able to marvel at a side of nature that we don't often take the time to explore.

I hope you all had a wonderful first half of June, and I'd love to hear about some of your recent adventures off the beaten path...
