Handmade Holidays

Handmade holidays in July?  Yes.  I promised myself a long time ago that if I was going to give hand knit gifts, I wouldn't wait to begin until two weeks before the gift giving day.

I promised myself, because one winter I knit 23 pairs of slippers in 14 days.  It was my last year in college.  It was the brief period of time when I hadn't quite recovered from the insanity of cramming for finals and the warm nostalgia of family traditions.  Add to the mix a husband, a six year old, and a one year old; clearly, the lack of sleep effected my common sense.  I haven't knit a slipper since.  Maybe it's time to try again.  Maybe next week.

This week, to kick things off, I decided to start with a small project. (It's 90 some degrees, after all.)  The Mira Sweater for my niece, who just turned two.  It's a really fast, easy knit and I love the buttons my oldest son, Jake, made for me.  I also made a few changes from my original pattern.  You can find all the notes over on Ravelry.

This Week

This week:

* Luke learned to how to make cornbread; which means we've been eating an obscene amount of cornbread.  He also made lasagna, Dad's famous brats, and vegetable noodle soup.

* We made paper origami boats after a morning rain storm.

* Spent an evening watching the St. Croix Valley Orchestra play for the local "Music in the Park" series.

*  There was also knitting in the park; I'm getting a head start on Holiday gifts.  Want to join me?  I'll be sharing more about this on Monday.

What have you been up to this week?

Homesteading

Homesteading:  A weekly account of our journey to becoming off grid homesteaders.  Our path will be long as we are only paying in cash and our funds are very limited.  Mike and I have no idea what we're doing so we'll be learning as we go.  I know we'll make mistakes and that's ok.  It's all part of the process.

We would love to read about your homesteading experiences, so if you'd like to share your favorite resources, tips, funny stories, recipes, books, website or even just a photo from the week, please leave a link in the comments.

This week we made it back up to the land for Luke-a-palooza.  We do birthday weekends in our family, and for Luke's seventh birthday he chose to invite all his cousins (and family) to camp on our land.  There was swimming in the river, bonfires, fireworks at the town festival, cake and more food than one could imagine possible.  We ended up with sixteen happy campers; a bit of crazy, but a lot of fun!

Needless to say that we didn't get any work accomplished on our trip up this time.  However, we did have a few young trees that broke in a recent storm.  They were blocking the trails, so we cut them up to use for fire wood.  Fortunately, we didn't lose any of the older trees and I'm really glad we weren't sleeping in the camper when it happened.

I also got around to photographing the finished shawl.  I'm just in love with the classic modern lines and a hint of femininity around the edge.  It's going to look fantastic with jeans and a t-shirt once the weather turns cool again.

I hope to have the pattern and yarn available by next week some time.

Catching Up

I bet you can't even guess how much catching up a girl can accomplish in one week without a modem and internet.  So much, in fact, that I can't even show you all in one post!

The boys and I picked loads of juicy, wild black cap berries on our way home from the flea market.  We planned on making pancakes with the berries for dinner, but they didn't make the ride home!

While wandering around the flea market, I also found a few vintage linens for making these adorable drawstring bags.  I made a set for us and a few for the shop too!  I've been using our bags for small knitting projects, produce bags (instead of plastic) at the market, and as a place to wrangle all of the wool dryer balls.  The boys are loving them for all sorts of treasures.

Don't forget to stop back tomorrow to see what else I've got to share with you!

FOG

The fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
