How to make pear sauce

Every year about this time when the leaves begin to swirl, a not so dwarf pear tree across the street begins to drop its fruit like grenades from a WWII fighter plane.  The deer and squirrels usually beat us to the juicy buffet, but this year my husband and I happened to be strolling along under the giant pear tree on a blustery moonlit evening when I got hit on the back of the head with a piece of fruit!  We frantically gathered all of the pummeling pears our shirts could hold and headed for home to make pear sauce!!

First, wash all of the dirt off the fruit...

Next, cut out all of the bruises and seeds...

Load up your pot and cook on medium heat until soft...

Mash the soft fruit with a potato masher or food processor until the pears are the consistency of apple sauce.  Fill the jars within a quarter inch of the top.  We sealed the jars by boiling them for 30 minutes in a large canning pot...

Enjoy~

Road trippin'...

For our ninth anniversary, Mike and I decided to send the boys to Grandma and Grandpa's house, rent a tiny, fuel efficient car and hit the road for an all out ROAD TRIP!!  We missed the kids for about the first three miles, then quickly got over it!

Northern Wisconsin in the fall is spectacular...

with hundreds of small town fall festivals...

secret passageways...

marvelous sunsets...

and sleeping under the moon and stars. (Well, the intention of sleeping under the moon and stars.  It ended up being 39 degrees so we opted for sleeping in the car instead.  Good thing too, because the windows were frosted over in the morning!)...

I hope you had a wonderful week~

Playing hookie

Everyone cut out early today to spend a fleeting warm autumn day at Cole's favorite park.  It was one of those days when the air was just cool enough to be comfortable, and if you sat still for a moment, the sun was just high enough to wrap your shoulders in a blanket of warmth.

Luke studies the new train he picked up at Goodwill...

and I con the guys into picking up every buckeye they could find, because they're edible and great for dyeing fiber!  Right?

Wrong.  Due to their high tannic acid content, buckeyes are not edible.  They do, however, work for dyeing fiber brown, so I believe an experiment is in order next week.  I'll post a tutorial if it all works out!

What do you do when playing hookie?

Then there'd be no reason for sleeping in late...

or singing obnoxiously loud in the shower...

Wait.  I do that everyday!  Well...

A northerly wind...

Yesterday was one of those wonderful autumn days where the wind was blowing in a bit of a chill from the North and the sky was covered in a blanket of steely gray clouds.  The kind of day where all you want to do is eat warm delicious food, slip on your warmest wool socks, and snuggle in with your favorite sweater and a sketchbook.

The process of collecting and storing ideas is ongoing for me.  My sketchbook goes everywhere with me and I'm constantly describing colors, shapes, textures, and movement.  As an artist, I see potential inspiration all around me, and I don't want to filter the thoughts, because you never know when an idea might be a perfect fit.  Some of the ideas have been there for years, and what may not have turned out to be anything at the time, may inspire me to create something beautiful today.

I once described to a friend that in my head I see my ideas in a carousel of pictures (I'm not crazy, really!).  Every time I come up with an idea, or usually on Friday nights when my friends say, "Oh, you could try this..."  a new picture is put into the carousel and it just goes round and round, until I do something with it.  I've found that keeping this journal of creative dreams helps me calm the constant need to produce and allows me to focus on what I truly love.

My guys are also budding artists so on crisp, rainy days like this, they love to join me on the bed to snuggle in with a stack of art supplies, a good book, and a cup of hot chicken noodle soup.  I feel so fortunate to live in a creative home and to have my kids grow up around me feeling free to let their ideas soar.

How do you collect and store your inspiration?

Change is in the air...

As I turned the corner on my way home from a morning of good coffee, even better friends, and a warming skein of birchbark yarn, I realized that the world was changing rapidly right before my eyes!  A cloud of golden yellow birch leaves went swirling around me as I made my way up the driveway, past the wilting plants and fleeces drying in the sun.  Plants aren't the only things changing swiftly this Autumn either.  The cool weather leaves me invigorated, inspiring new adventures, creative endeavors, and personal growth.  All signs point to change in a big way....

I've had these thick, snug, toasty, wooly, oatmeal socks since I was in high school, (they're my favorite, you see) but I'm thinking it might be time for a change to some new favorite socks!

What positive changes have you been experiencing lately?

Yarn as food?

I think the old adage applies to yarn as it does for food... Don't shop when you're hungry, and don't dye when you're hungry or you'll end up with kitchen full of deliciously yummy yarn!

Remember this week when I wrote about washing, carding and spinning wool....  Well, here it is in all it's wonderful juicy grapieness.  I can't bare to part with it, so I'm keeping it for myself!

However, these luscious palates are available for picking through the shop.  I'll be adding a few of them each day (man Etsy listing takes FOREVER), but if you'd like to purchase before then, just shoot me an email and I'll set you up with Paypal~

I threw in some kettle dyed yarns this time, for all you solid lovin' mamas.  These are easily reproduced, so if you'd like more than the 50g let me know!

Also, all this Etsy listing didn't leave much time for pattern writing, so I'll post that GH soaker pattern just as soon as I can!

Have a wonderful weekend~
